When considering window replacement in Logan, Utah, or wherever you live, it might be overwhelming when you start hearing terms that you aren’t familiar with. Perhaps, you’ll discover you have options between “flush-fin”, “nail-fin”, or even “brick molding”. You might be asking yourself “what the heck are they talking about? I have never heard of any of these terms before!”. Don’t worry, if you aren’t familiar with the different styles of window frames that may be available to you, we’re here to help clear it up for you.
Flush Fin Frames
Flush fins are the most common type of window frame for replacement windows, as it comes equipped with a wide frame that is mounted flush with the face of the window and comes in various different widths. These types of window frames are ideal when going in an existing hole to cover the space where the old frame met the exterior siding or stucco. No matter how exact your measurements are, it is going to be impossible to EXACTLY match an existing window, which is why flush fins are ideal to cover the caps and provide a clean look with the new window installed.
Nail Fin Frames
Nail fins, also known as nail flange frames, are primarily used in new construction, or remodeling jobs where the exterior of the home has been removed. The nail flange is generally set back about an inch from the face of the frame, where it can then lay on top of the exterior sheathing and be nailed directly in. Because there is no exterior siding or stucco, the nail flange will be covered up when the exterior material is installed, giving the windows a clean, and seamless look.
Brick Mold
Brick molding is actually a piece of milled wood that is used around the exterior perimeter of a window or a door, where the exterior of a home or building butts up to it. Modern brick molding refers to vinyl and metal flanges that are milled to resemble the milled wooden ones. Available in various different colors and widths, brick molding creates an attractive finish on many replacement window projects.
