Windows are great, they allow for a lot of natural light into your home, and when open they provide you with fresh air. They are also an important part of your home, as they protect your home from the elements and can save you money with their energy-efficient properties. But, when windows are older, foggy, leaky, cold, cracked, or broken, they aren’t doing what they were designed to do. When this happens, you might begin to wonder if it is going to be cheaper or better to repair your windows or replace them.

Deciding between window glass replacement and repair isn’t as simple as you might think, as there are many factors that play into the decision, including cost and repairs required. While it might seem that replacing your windows might be the obvious, easiest solution, the cost of new windows can put a damper on the idea. With new windows, possibly priced out of the equation, repairs seem the next obvious solution, but unfortunately, depending on the issue, sometimes repairs simply aren’t possible.

When to Repair Your Windows

There are some instances where it is easy and often expected for windows to simply be repaired back to their former state for a fraction of the cost of a new window. While this isn’t always possible, there are times when window glass replacement and repair is simply a no-brainer.

  • Cracked or Broken Glass

Safety and aesthetics can play a crucial part in the decision to repair the broken glass in a window. Whether it is a single-pane or a double-pane window, the glass can easily and affordably be replaced. Not sure what you need or what it will take to replace the broken glass, contact Gordon’s Glass to have a technician come and give you a free estimate.

  • Stuck Sashes

Over time, older windows may not open or close as smoothly or as easily as when they were brand new. This is especially true for single or double-hung windows that rely on balance springs to slide up and down. The good news is, these types of problems are easily fixed at the fraction of the cost of a new window.

  • Foggy Windows

Just because your windows are foggy, doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to replace your windows. Foggy windows are caused by water condensing inside a double or triple-paned insulated glass unit. When condensation appears between the panes of glass, it is an indication that the unit has failed and no longer is working the way it was intended to work. When this happens, it is simply easy to order a replacement unit with a new seal to correct the foggy window problem.

When to Replace Your Windows

Unfortunately, there are instances where repairing your windows isn’t an option or isn’t going to be cost effective. In these instances, a full window replacement will be your best bet. While it might be a big upfront cost, the price of a new window will prove to be a huge return on your investment in energy savings over the lifetime of the window.

  • Wanting to Update

If you are simply wanting to update your windows to something newer, more energy-efficient, it is clear that a window glass replacement is going to be the right choice compared to a repair.

  • Cracked or Broken Frame

Windows are solid and sturdy until they aren’t. If your window frame is cracked or broken for any reason, it can be more cost-effective and beneficial to purchase a new window. Replacing the window instead of repairing the window, as more often than not it is impossible to repair a cracked or broken frame.

  • Costly Repairs

Depending on the number of repairs that need to be done, or the extent of the damage requiring repairs, sometimes it is more affordable to replace the window than replace it. While this isn’t always the case, it is something to keep in mind, when getting estimates.
