New windows are an investment, one that you are going to want to take care, to ensure you continue to get the biggest return on your investment that you can. Once the installers have left, it will be up to you to keep your windows looking their best for years to come. Regularly cleaning and maintenance of your windows will allow you to notice any damage or problems early on before they become a huge problem.

Window Cleaning Tips

Over time, dirt, and other debris can build up on windows, making it difficult to see the beautiful view outside. Taking the time to clean and remove dirt from your windows will allow you to be able to see outside without obtrusion, and be able to detect if there are any problems with your windows.

  • With a clean window, you’ll be able to see if your Low-E coating has gone bad, as you’ll be able to see the discoloration, bubbling, or peeling that can accompany failed Low-E.
  • Clean your window tracks from the dirt and dust buildup, so windows can open and close properly.
  • While you are cleaning your windows, you should also inspect your screens to see if there are any holes or tears in them that needs to be repaired.
  • As you are cleaning your windows, look to see if you notice any condensation between the panes of glass, as an indication that the unit is failing and will need to be replaced, sooner rather than later.

How to Clean Replacement Windows

Cleaning your windows is an easy chore to do, even though it might not get done all that often. Here are a few tips on how best to clean and care for new and replacement windows.

  • Use a good quality glass cleaner, or mild soap and water along with a soft, clean cloth or paper towels to clean both sides of the glass in your window.
  • Never use a razor blade or anything abrasive to clean your glass.
  • Decrease streaking by choosing not to wash your windows in direct sunlight.
  • Vacuum dirt from the sills and tracks of your window frames.

Window Cleaning Safety Tips

Unfortunately, not all windows in your home will be located on the ground floor or in the basement, making it easy to clean both the inside and the outside without having to pull out the trusty ladder. For those upper-story windows that are harder to access to clean, here are a few tips to keep in mind to safely clean your windows.

  • Clean as many windows as you can from the inside, to minimize the amount of time you’ll spend on a ladder.
  • Do not rely on your screen for support while cleaning your window. The screen is not strong or secure enough to support you and keep you steady.
  • Don’t lean out your window to clean the outside
  • Accidents can happen when cleaning windows on the ground floor as well as on upper stories.

When you take care of your windows they will last you for years to come, looking and functioning as good as they did the day they were installed.
