Accidents and emergencies can happen at any time, and usually at the most inconvenient times. When accidents and emergencies happen, and a window gets broken, it is imperative that it is taken care of quickly to prevent injuries, protection against the elements, and unwanted entry into your home or business. While the concept of boarding up a broken window is relatively straightforward across the board, knowing how to board up commercial windows can prove to be slightly more challenging. But don’t worry it is doable here are the steps to take, to safely and effectively board up a commercial window.
In order to board up a commercial window, you’ll need to ensure that you have all the right tools and equipment before you begin.
With the necessary supplies assembled, you are now ready to board up your broken window until it can be repaired or replaced.
First things first, when working around broken glass, you need to protect yourself from injury. Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes from shards of broken glass that could fall, or cut you while trying to board up the window. The last thing you need to worry about is a serious injury while attempting to board up and secure a broken window.
Now that you are ready to access the broken window, check to see if any of the remaining shards of glass will not fall out of the frame while you are working on boarding it up. Loose pieces of glass that can safely be removed should be placed in a paper bag or directly in a garbage can for safety. Pieces that can’t safely be removed should be carefully taped together and to the frame, to prevent them from coming out at a later time.
Once you have secured the broken shards of glass, you are now ready to cover up the hole until a new window can be installed. Using a tape measure, measure the opening so that you know what size of plywood you will need to completely cover the opening. Carefully cut a piece of ½” plywood, (or whatever thickness you have), to the correct size. Drill pilot holes in the corners, making it easier to attach the plywood to the window frame. It is quicker and easier to use screws rather than nails, to hold the plywood in place and remove it when it is time to replace the window.
This temporary fix will keep your business protected from unwanted intruders and the elements until the window can be fixed or replaced.
