If you’re a commercial glass company, you know what it takes to accurately install storefront glass systems and curtain wall systems. If you aren’t a glass professional, you might need to hire one if you are interested in replacing or installing a new commercial glass system. But, don’t worry if you can’t install it yourself, there are a plethora of commercial glass companies out there that can do the job for you.

With so many different glazing contractors out there, how do you know which one is the right way to complete the job for you? Here we’ll discuss a few things that you should take into consideration, to help you hire the right professionals for all your commercial glass needs.

Experience and Knowledge

When it comes to commercial glass, there are various different applications and projects: repairs, replacements, and new construction. These applications also apply to storefronts and curtain walls. Because there are so many different applications and systems that fall under the umbrella of commercial glass, it is important to find a commercial glass company that is experienced and knowledgeable about all the different glazing systems.

An experienced and knowledgeable commercial glass company will be able to do the job correctly, efficiently, and in a timely manner, which can minimize the downtime to your business. Taking these factors into consideration implies that you should only trust your commercial glass needs to reputable glazing contractors who specialize in commercial glass installation. That's not to say that residential contractors can’t take on small commercial jobs, but it may not be the best option.

Glass Options

Typical glass storefronts are installed with a form of “safety” glass. The two main types of safety glass are tempered and laminated glass. Both are classified as safety glass, but for different reasons. An experienced commercial glass company will be able to help you make informed decisions about what type of glass to install, and what type is required by law and to meet code.

  • Tempered Glass: tempered glass is produced using a special heating process, which takes regular annealed glass and makes it four times stronger. When tempered glass breaks, it breaks into a million tiny pieces, rather than large glass shards, which is what makes it safer.
  • Laminated Glass: laminated glass is different from tempered glass in the fact that it is two pieces of annealed glass, that has a very strong layer of laminate that is sandwiched between the two. When laminated glass breaks, it is the layer of laminate that keeps the glass shards in place, instead of flailing out and becoming dangerous.

New Construction

New construction requires additional considerations that repairs and replacements don’t. For one, the commercial glass company will be working with other contractors on the job, can they get along with other professionals? When subcontractors don’t get along, it can result in delays and mistakes which cost time and money.

Along with new construction, comes the higher probability that there will be custom window and door sizes, and glass types that are outside of the norm. In order to achieve the desired look and outcome, it is important to find an experienced commercial glass company that has experience in ordering or fabricating custom commercial glass products and installing them. This isn’t something that you want to trust just anyone.
